We bet you will be surprised by how many Estate Agents are owned by banks and building societies and how many have different names but are owned by the same banks, building societies and mortgage lenders!

We would say they that financial institutions own Estate Agents as a way of getting mortgage business (money lending is far more profitable than selling property if done correctly). Many of them also own the chartered surveyors (or have agreements) and the solicitors (or have agreements) too! We think this is something the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which also took over several responsibilities of the Office of Fair Trading and was called Competition Commission (however is probably still best know as the Monopolies and Mergers Commission) should investigate.
