THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT / ASK YOUR
SURVEYOR BEFORE YOU INSTRUCT THEM TO CARRY
OUT WORK FOR YOU
1.0 Not all surveyors are qualified - look out for BSc (ordinary degree) or MSc (masters degree) and MRICS or FRICS. Some chartered surveyors may also say they are RICS regulated with a lion logo that looks like this
2.0 Who owns them?
Are they owned by a mortgage company, estate agent and not working independently? Not all chartered surveyors are independent, in fact most are owned by banks and other mortgage lenders and estate agents (yes really). Look out for ISVA or Independent Surveyors and Valuers Association with this logo:
3.0 Ask them to show you an example of the survey for a similar property that they will carry out for you.
4.0 Is their surveyor prepared to meet you at the property and/or talk to you after the survey has been carried out.
5.0 Please remember that all surveys are not the same, just as all cars, all houses and all people are not the same.
6.0 Just because the surveyor is expert in one part of surveying doesn't mean he is expert in another.
