Interesting Facts About Canning Town and the Canning Town Area

Canning Town is a part of East London , in the borough of Newham. It is situated in the area of the former London docks, on the north side of the Thames .

Before the 19th century, the area was mainly marsh land, and could not be reached by road – only by boats (or a small toll bridge). An iron bridge was built in 1810 to take the newly commissioned Barking Road across the river Lea. The bridge was replaced in 1896 and again in 1934 at a site to the north. Today's well-known flyover began on a much smaller scale in the ‘60's.

The area was originally known as Hallsville, but renamed during the time of its expansion after (it is believed) the first Viceroy of India – Charles Canning.

During the mid 1800's the population increased following the development of the railway between North Woolwich and Stratford that carried goods from the docks.

Following the opening of the Royal Victoria Dock in 1855, the area was further developed primarily to house workers from the docks. Several new settlements were born, amongst them the areas we now recognise as Custom House and Silvertown.

In the 1930's the borough of West Ham began a serious slum clearance programme during which new houses, nurseries and clinics were built and opened. The area suffered major bomb damage during the Second World War, and the consequent rebuilding, rehousing and transfer of industries - allied to this damage meant that over 80% of the houses were destroyed and new council housing estates rose up.

However, although it is close to many of the recent dockland developments, it remains among the 5% most deprived areas in the U.K.

Due to this, it is now part of a new regeneration initiative, with 8,000 new homes planned and a rejuvenated town centre. New community facilities are planned, along with improvements to primary schools. We have vast experience in carrying our residential and commercial building surveys in Canning Town and throughout the London area.

Canning Town has its own Underground station, on the Jubilee Line. It also interchanges with the Docklands Light Railway.

Back in the 1970's female hysteria hit London. With his good looks and charm David Essex certainly captured the hearts of ladies both young and old across the UK. His concerts saw scenes of excitement reminiscent of Beatlemania. His father was an East End dock worker and his mother a self-taught pianist. He grew up in Canning Town and during his youth he loved to play football and dreamed of one day becoming a famous player. However, in his early twenties his passion for music and theatre saw him achieve nineteen Top 40 singles in the UK and sixteen Top 40 albums. He also had a widespread career as an actor performing on stage and screen.

If you are considering purchasing a property in Canning Town then please make contact with one of our surveyors at 1stAssociated.co.uk who would welcome the opportunity to carry out a survey on the property. All our surveys are clear and concise and we are always keen for you to meet us on site during the survey. We often find many of our clients feel this is extremely beneficial.
