Interesting Facts About Highgate

Highgate is spread over three London Boroughs, Camden, Haringey and Islington and is a well-populated part of London. Neighbouring areas include Hampstead and Finchley which are just as popular and remain high on the list of desired locations for commuters.

Highgate remains an area of London which has retained its village charm and we are often in the area carrying out both Residential and Commercial Surveys.

Highgate Cemetery is a much admired historical beautiful Victorian landmark situated on the top of Highgate Hill. It was consecrated by the Bishop of London in May 1839.

The cemetery is made up of the original site on the western side and the newer eastern part opened in 1854. Due to the large population of London in the Victorian times seven large cemeteries were built to accommodate the dead, with Highgate being one of them. There are 167,000 people buried in the cemetery in 52,000 graves. There are approximately 850 prominent people buried at Highate and probably the most renowned inhabitant is Karl Marx “the father of communism”. Max Wall, the famous comedian and entertainer is also buried here. It is a popular visitor's attraction.

Theatre lovers will be interested to know that Highgate has its own multi-arts venue. A prominent gothic church, sympathetically converted, is now home to a 160-seat capacity theatre, dance and rehearsal studio, otherwise known as Jacksons Lane . Most of you will probably know, or have heard of, Matt Lucas and David Walliams. The duo, probably most famous for the comedy sketch show Little Britain, actually performed their first ever show at Jacksons Lane.

We always enjoy visiting the area of Highgate and being surveyors we take time to appreciate the beautiful 18th century architecture if has to offer. Retaining its village charm it boasts magnificent properties in roads such as Broadlands Road, Sheldon Avenue and Holly Lodge Gardens.

Near to Kenwood House, Bishopswood Road is a place where we have carried out building surveys also known as structural surveys.

If you are travelling through or visiting Highate then you are most likely to pass the famous Highgate School. Established in 1565 it was originally destined for the local poor. Today however, it is an exclusive public school. It has had many famous students pass through its doors over the years for example the English poet, writer and broadcaster John Betjemen and Clive Sinclair the inventor of the pocket calculator both attended.

From this we can tailor make your building survey. Depending upon your knowledge level we will add additional photographs to the building survey or will give you more definitions of building terminology, or add extra sketches to help describe particular areas of concern or to show you for example what type of roof your proposed property has or what type of brickwork the property is built in. By doing this we can make sure that you completely understand the property you are buying and that you understand what the issues are.

Commercial Building Surveyor

Our Commercial Building Surveys are also tailored to suit your property requirements. When you book your survey we will ask you to grade your commercial property knowledge from 1 - 4, with 1 being 'next to no commercial property knowledge' and 4 being 'excellent commercial property knowledge'. From this we can tailor make your building survey. So depending on how much knowledge you have of Commercial building surveying and typical problems arising from commercial building surveying our building surveyors can adjust their building survey report accordingly and include more photos and detail descriptions of the issue and your best course of action to fix them.
