Hackney Borough

 

Hackney

Hackney, a place full of history was once a village until the railway arrived and Hackney grew.

Hackney has some lovely Georgian and Victorian housing.

Hackney is a busy place with plenty of bars, restaurants and shopping.

This is the home of the famous Hackney Empire', built in 1901 as a music hall. The Hackney Empire has played host to some big names from around the world and offers Music, Comedy, Dance and Drama. Top of the Pops' with Marty Wilde and Cliff Richard was filmed here and Liberace' the famous American pianist and showman has even graced their stage.

 

Hackney Marshes

The green open space of Hackney Marshes is home to the local Sunday league football and has over 60 pitches where over 70 matches are played weekly.

A lot of improvements are happening here including the new Hackney Marshes Centre' which is near completion and will provide 30 changing rooms, a café, offices and education rooms.

Hackney Marshes Pavilion' is planned for 2012 and will provide fantastic facilities for cricketers.

 

Hackney Wick

Hackney Wick once the home of Lesneys Factories' where matchbox toys were made from 1947 to 1983 is an area facing change.

Hackney Wick is close to where the 2012 Olympic Games will be held.

Hackney Wick is being compared to Shoreditch' as designers and artists move in attracted by the lower rents and historic buildings and warehouses.

 

Haggerston

Haggerston , a mainly residential area is set between Hoxton and Hackney in the London Borough of Hackney.

Being near Hoxton and Shoreditch it is a popular place to live for young professionals.

Broadway Market' in Haggerston is fast making a name for itself. This is a farmer's style market with plenty of trendy boutiques, bars and restaurants.

 

Homerton

Homerton in the London Borough of Hackney is home to Chats Palace ', an art and community space set in a grade ll listed building. Chats Palace is available for hire for live music gigs, private parties and film shoots.

Marc Bolan the musician was born in Homerton.

 

Hoxton

Fashionable Hoxton , once filled with derelict industrial buildings is an exciting place in London with trendy bars, clubs, restaurants, music venues and art centres.

Hoxton Hall', a youth and community arts centre was built here in 1863.

The Geffrye Museum ' in Kingsland Road is set in 18 th century almshouses and shows period rooms from 1600 to date. There is also a walled herb garden and four period gardens here.

 

Shoreditch

Shoreditch , once known for its textile and furniture industries is now a trendy area in the borough of Hackney.

Shoreditch has plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs and numerous art galleries.

Boy George' has a fashion boutique here called B-Rude' which is situated in the grounds of Shoreditch Church .

Shoreditch House', a private members club is in the heart of Shoreditch. The house has a two lane bowling alley, gym, sauna and steam rooms, games rooms, restaurant and private dining room and also a 16 metre heated swimming pool on the rooftop.

The White Cube' art gallery was set up in Shoreditch in April 2000 in a 1920's industrial building and has 2000 square feet of exhibition space.

Jamie Oliver' the celebrity chef has his restaurant Fifteen' here.

 

Stamford Hill

Stamford Hill in the London Borough of Hackney is home to a very large Jewish community. Jewish men in traditional dress, on their way to and from the many synagogues in the area is a common sight.

 

Stoke Newington

Stoke Newington is a multicultural area with a village like atmosphere and has become a very popular place to live.

It has a mix of traditional pubs, trendy bars and restaurants.

Abney Park ' in Stoke Newington is a woodland memorial park and nature reserve and was a former garden cemetery.

The Vortex Jazz Club' in Stoke Newington is a jazz venue that features artists from all over the world.

Stoke Newington is home to the beautiful 54 acre Clissold Park' which houses Clissold Mansion', a Grade II listed building dating back to the 1790's. The park offers a wide range of facilities including a paddling pool, children's playground, an aviary and a large animal enclosure that has deer, goats, rabbits and chickens. Fetes, fairs, festivals and circuses are held throughout the year at the park.
