Interesting facts we know about the Sutton Borough area

Interesting fact about the Sutton Borough number one

Sutton it can be argued could have had a variety of names when it was first given this in a 17 th Century Charter, such possibilities included Suthane, Sudtana, Bedingtone, Cegeham (Cheam) and Aeweltone (Carshalton)!

Interesting fact about Sutton of London Borough number two

It is rumoured it is a very diverse borough that is inspired by a variety of past movements, it has many visitors who come to see arts and craft for example.

Interesting fact about Sutton of London Borough number three

We have heard that Sutton is one of the less noisy London Borough's, we don't know who started that rumour. It contains a range of housing estates that were built during the post war period such as one that the Bill TV Series was filmed on!

Interesting fact about Sutton number four

There are many famous T.V shows that have been filmed here. We also heard a rumour that that Mr Bean (popular comedian better known as Rowan Atkinson) was filmed near Alders, and that The Bill was filmed on a council estate here before it was demolished! Even Sutton FC have tried to get on TV by attempting to film for a Lucozade advert here!

Interesting fact about Sutton number five

We have just remembered one other thing about the Sutton area, Please be careful driving here! It has one of the worst reputations for harsh penalties being given to cars such as parking tickets (our Surveyors have been victims).

Sutton History

Archaeologists have found that there were people living in the area as far back as Bronze Age and Neolithic times and the Saxons settled in the area for many years.

Sutton was recorded as Sudtone in the Chertsey Abbey Charter, drawn up in the 7 th Century. It is believed that the name Sudtone means south enclosure or south town, with the ton' bit at the end a common ending for Saxon towns.

Until 1965 Sutton was part of the county of Surrey , after which it became the heart of the London Borough of Sutton.

Famous people that were born, have lived, or are living in Sutton

Sir John Major, former British Prime Minister, was born in Carshalton.

James Cracknell, OBE, Olympic twice gold medallist rower, was born in Sutton and another notable sportsman, Alec Stewart, OBE, former England cricketer was born in nearby Merton.

The actress Penelope Keith, probably most famous for her part as Margot Leadbetter in 1970s sit com The Good Life' was born in Sutton.

Notable musicians from the area include Jeff Beck, formerly of the Yard Birds, born in Wallington and Sir Harry Secombe, singer, comedian, and of course one of The Goons', lived not far away in Guildford and the Secombe Theatre in Sutton is named after him.

Famous buildings we have not surveyed!

One of the most famous buildings is the 16 th Century timber framed Whitehall in the heart of Cheam Village. There are many other conservation areas such as this.

Unfortunately we haven't been able to come up with any other really famous buildings in the Sutton of London Borough area, so anyone who knows any please phone or e-mail us, we are sure we can sort out some sort of prize!

We would add that as with many areas of London it has a mass of Victorian and Georgian houses, which may up the majority of the housing stock in the area, with some newer developments for the after war building took place, replacing bomb damaged houses and some housing with 1960 post-war built houses. We are more than happy to carry out building surveys, structural surveys, engineers reports on these properties to give you a clear idea of any problems that you may be buying when you buy your new house.

Things to do in Sutton Borough
