Bethnal Green
Bethnal Green , once a haunt for East End gangsters is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Bethnal Green has seen a lot of regeneration recently and although there are still Victorian terraced houses and mansion blocks a lot of the council blocks have been demolished and new apartment blocks built.
Bethnal Green is home to the famous Colombia Road Flower Market' and Bethnal Green shopping centres around Bethnal Green Road , Hackney Road and Roman Road .
Bethnal Green still has the original cockney pubs but also has trendy bars, cafes and restaurants.
The V & A Museum of Childhood' is in Bethnal Green and features a collection of childhood-related objects such as dolls, puppets, games, clothing, furniture and art from the 1600's to date.
The London Buddhist Centre' on Roman Road teaches two Buddhist meditation practices; the Mindfulness of Breathing' and the Metta Bhavana'.
York Hall' a well-known Championship Boxing Venue is also in Bethnal Green.
Bethnal Green was used to film some of the sketches from the comedy show Little Britain'.
Blackwall
Blackwall in Tower Hamlets is a riverside district with maritime history.
The Mary Rose' ship was in 1514 refitted in Blackwall.
Blackwall is today best known for its tunnels under the Thames .
Bow
Bow is a mostly residential area in East London located between Stratford , the Docklands and the City.
The historic St-Mary-le-Bow' Church is here and it is said that to be a true cockney you must be born within hearing distance of the sound of the Bow Bells'.
Victoria Park in Bow was made a public park in 1845 and is a great green space' for people to enjoy. The park has open air concerts in the summer, a lido, tennis courts, a bowling-green, cricket pitches and cycle paths.
Bromley-by-Bow
Bromley-by-Bow is a working class area with some Victorian properties, flats and redeveloped council estates and is within easy reach of the Docklands.
Isle of Dogs
The Isle of Dogs' in the east end of London is the location of Canary Wharf '. Canary Wharf is a vibrant business district whose buildings dominate the London skyline. Canary Wharf has shops, restaurants, pubs, wine bars and leisure facilities.
The Isle of Dogs was used in the films Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ' and Love Actually'.
Limehouse
Limehouse is located on the north bank of the Thames and was once famous for its ship building.
A lot of the properties in Limehouse are warehouse conversions or modern apartments with great river views.
Gordon Ramsay' the celebrity chef opened The Narrow' pub in Limehouse in 2007 in a grade II listed building that was once a Dock Masters house.
Shadwell
Shadwell it is thought had no inhabitants until the late 17 th century. Now it attracts many City professionals to live due to its proximity to Canary Wharf .
Spitalfields
Spitalfields is an exciting place in East London with its famous market, award winning restaurants and boutiques.
Spitalfields has a great mixture of cultures.
Lovely old Georgian houses and cobbled streets mix with contemporary apartments, some converted from old Soup Kitchens' and Victorian Baths'.
St Katherine's Docks
St Katherine's Docks next to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London was very badly bombed in the war and in the 1970's was turned into a luxurious yacht marina.
St Katherine's Docks has a large number of private residences that have stunning views overlooking the marina.
The Docks have a great selection of waterside restaurants.
Wapping
Wapping, once famous for its boatyards is on the north side of the Thames and is a mixture of old and new from ancient pubs to luxury riverside flats.
The Wapping Project' located in the historic Wapping Hydraulic Power Station' is a centre for the arts with dance, video and music.
Wapping is well known for its huge protests in 1986 when Rupert Murdoch moved in with News International and thousands of print workers were made redundant.
Whitechapel
Whitechapel is an East End area full of history.
It is home to the Woman's Library' in Old Castle Street which was founded in 1926. This library, open to both men and women holds one of the UK 's largest collections devoted to women's history.
The Whitechapel Art Gallery' which is over a hundred years old has exhibitions, artists commissions and art courses and has housed work from Pablo Picasso to name but a few.
Whitechapel was also once the home of John Merrick' the famous Elephant Man'.
